MINNEAPOLIS, MN -- Medical device company Medtronic (NYSE: MDT) announced the launch of software designed to assist patients with Parkinson's disease.

Called Activa DBS Patient Referral Software, the application is for neurologists to use in determining whether their patients who have been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease would be good candidates for referral to a deep brain stimulation center or implanter.

The software was first launched in Europe in 2007.  The company says that typical Parkinson's patients receive deep brain stimulation on average 14 years after diagnosis.
