Mountain View, California -- A consortium of leading technology companies announced that they are coming together to create and operate a white spaces database.
Designed to make use of vacant television broadband spectrum, the White Spaces Database Group said it "intends to establish data formats and protocols that are open and non-proprietary and will advocate that database administration be open and nonexclusive."
The founding companies that make up the consortium include Dell, Google, Microsoft, HP, Motorola, Comsearch and NeuStar.
