San Jose, California  --  CMOS image provider Aptina has announced the launch of an 8-megapixel image sensor.

The new 1/3.2" optical format will enable it to function in low z-height environments such as smartphone cameras.

The sensor can operate at up to 30 frames per second which the company says will provide camcorder quality 1080p HD video.

Aptina says the sensor will be available in mass production by the end of the second quarter of this year.
