Windsor To Purchase Battery Powered Buses

Monday, May 7, 2012 5:01:00 AM PDT | VentureDeal Staff

Windsor, Ontario  --  The City of Windsor, Ontario announced a letter of intent to purchase and deploy up to ten 40 foot battery powered buses for city transit.

The buses will be powered by iron-phosphate batteries that are the only rechargeable batteries that contain no toxic electrolytes, heavy metals or use caustic materials.

The company supplying the buses, BYD, is also working toward having the ability to repurpose the bus batteries upon retirement into fixed Energy Storage Stations.

Since Windsor is on the Canadian side of Detroit, Michigan, bus service will extend into the United States as well.

The city says that the deployment of the buses is the first in North America of its kind.
