Waltham, Massachusetts  --  National Grid and the city of Worcester will launch a smart grid pilot, according to a press release.

The partnership initiative, which was approved recently by the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities, will offer up to 15,000 National Grid participating customers advanced metering systems and the ability to choose alternative energy sources.

In addition, the technology will enable the power company to dispatch repair and maintenance crews directly to the source of the problem, which promises to restore power more quickly in the event of an outage.
