Hawthorne, California  --  NASA has chosen Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX) to develop the successor spacecraft to the space shuttle for transporting American astronauts into space.

The Dragon spacecraft will now be subject to final modifications necessary to prepare it to safely transport up to seven astronauts.

The vehicle promises to deploy the most advanced launch escape system with a minimal number of stage separations through orbit.

SpaceX currently expects to undertake its first manned flight by the end of 2015.
