Shams 1 Launches Largest Solar Power Plant

   Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates  --  Abu Dhabi's renewable energy company Masdar announced the launch of what it calls the world's largest concentrated solar power plant.

Called Shams 1, the plant will generate up to 100 MW of solar-thermal power, enough to generate electricity for 20,000 homes and displace up to 175,000 tons of carbon dioxide per year.

The project covers 2.5 km², or the equivalent of 285 football fields and incorporates the latest in parabolic trough technology.
