London, UK  --  Activity tracker electronics outsold smartwatches by 4 to 1, according to a report by ABI Research.

Called Wearables and Smart Accessories Market Research, the report said that smartwatch sales dropped in Q1 2014 vs. Q4 2013, partly due to seasonal factors but more due to the imminent launch of Samsung's Gear family of smartwatches.

For Q1 2014, activity trackers shipped 2.35 million units and smartwatches shipped 510,000 units.

The report contends that "extending smartphone functions to the watch is a weak use case and retrograde step."
