Charleston, South Carolina  --  Afaxys Pharmaceuticals has announced the nationwide launch of a new over-the-counter emergency contraceptive.

Called EContra EZ, the medication is a single tablet taken orally and can be used up to 72 hours after unprotected sex or suspected contraceptive failure.

The drug works by delaying or preventing ovulation and is the second emergency contraceptive in Afaxys' family of contraceptive products.

Afaxys says that it is the "only US pharmaceutical company to offer both over-the-counter and prescription emergency contraceptives."

The drug is more effective the sooner it is taken after intercourse.
