Chicago, Illinois  --  ADM Crop Risk Services said that it has received approval from the Federal Aviation Administration to operate aerial drones.

ADM said the unmanned aerial vehicles will be used to expedite and improve insurance claims processing for agricultural policyholders.

The drones will be able to identify damaged areas, corn stand counts and prevented planting acreage.

ADM said it is developing proprietary software that will enable "the vehicles to automatically download measurements and information as images are taken, allowing data analysis and claims processing to begin almost immediately."

The company also stated it will officially launch the system for customers in 2016.
