Dublin, Ireland  --  Telecommunications company Hibernia Networks announced that it is in the process of laying fiber-optic cables connecting North America to Europe.

Three cable ships are laying the cables and have already been loaded with 2,000 km of armored cable.

The company says that this will be the first "modern fiber optic cable connecting North America to Europe and more than 12 years."

The cables consist of six-fiber-pare submarine cables connected between 60 amplifiers, with each amplifier weighing over 500 pounds.

Total cross-sectional design capacity of the cable will be over 53 Tb per second.
