Auburn Hills, Michigan  -- General Motors will use a new, ultralight composite material for its 2016 Chevrolet Corvette automobiles.

Manufactured by Continental Structural Plastics (CSP), the new TCA Ultra Lite material will result in a 20 pound weight savings on the Stingray Coupe model.

Manufacturing advancements as a result of the collaboration between Chevrolet and CSP have reduced the density of the car body panels from 1.9 specific gravity for the 2013 model to a 1.2 specific gravity for the 2016 model.

CSP says that the composite is now in production on 2016 automobiles.

The company holds more than 50 patents covering materials development and manufacturing processes in composite materials.
